Summary
High-speed travel has taking a great leap forward. In 2003, Maglev commercial operations began in Shanghai, China, where a Maglev train connects that city of 15 million to Pudong International Airport 19 miles away. 8-minute commutes at 270 mph replace 45 to 60 minute trips; reduce nearby traffic congestion; while providing a steep increase in airport access capacity. Germany has approved a maglev system to link Munich city-center to its airport and has realized similar intermodal transportation efficiencies. The US has considered a 38 to 47 mile Maglev city-airport connector for Pittsburgh or BWI (Washington DC to Baltimore).
